His name is synonymous with the great’s in house music. Responsible for opening the warehouse and Music box and introducing us to Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy, Robert Williams is House Music Royalty.  Throwing and promoting parties since the 1970s, he is a master at creating events people love to attend.  This year, house people gathered at the Elastic Arts Café to celebrate Robert Williams’s birthday. The room was a “who’s who” of the Chicago House Community.  DJs, producers, Recording artists and dancers all came together from every side of the city to pay tribute to a living legend.

The resident DJs behind the ultra-successful world recognized BANG Sunday’s, kicked off a new weekly residence at the Renaissance Bronzeville this past Sunday night.  Soul-frica started as a once a month event while they were doing BANG Sundays.  It incorporates the soul of house music offering a musical gumbo filled with the sounds of Afro, Tribal, Latin, R&B and soulful house music on a Sunday night.

Saturday I found myself at the MID for I love House Music Saturdays.  This week’s sound conductors were Mega Rousseau, John Simmons, Czboogie, David Sabat and Mike Dunn.  The party located in the “Century Room” at the MID is a more private party room located in the back of the MID nightclub.  It’s smaller and much more intimate.  Lush Red Velvet curtains, crystal chandeliers, and red wallpaper create a sexy atmosphere.

It was another OUTSTANDING night in Chicago House!   Renaissance Wednesdays’ hosted by promoters Reggie Corner, Ronda Flowers, and Robert “Koko” Walker, is a weekly party that showcases the best in soulful house music in an intimate environment. The club was packed early with people who were ready to hear the soulful styles of two of Chicago’s hottest female DJ’s; Dee Jay Alicia and Mz. Nicky D’Vine.  It was the ladies turn to bless the tables at the Renaissance Bronzeville. The location was the perfect setting for a sexy and soulful evening of house music.  The energy at Renaissance was high; the room was filled with familiar faces.   It was the middle of the week but people came out to party, have a good time and take the stress of the day off.

A "Soul Cleansing" Night in House

I said in a previous blog that House Music was healing. For many of us, it is the music that has the power to uplift us when our spirits are down.   That was apparent this past Saturday night at the Promontory.  It was an unseasonably warm January evening and dance patrons came early and filled up the dance floor quickly.  Presented by RFK, The Way We Were and The Chosen Few DJs, Terry Hunter & Alan King were joined by DJs Vick Lavender and Steve Maxwell at the Promontory in Chicago’s Hyde Park Neighborhood.  The music for the evening was new and fresh, showcasing the best in soulful, deep and afro house.  It was the end of a very intense week of emotions for most of us and each DJ delivered a musical sermon that was food for the soul.
