Love & Lust: A Sweetest Day To Remember

Love & Lust.png

Dee Jay Alicia is known for a series of mixes she created called Love & Lust.  These mixes are filled with songs of love, lust, heartbreak, and betrayal; the many types of ebb and flows that occur in intimate relationships.  Soulful and relatable, they are popular among her fan base.  The Love & Lust mix series began after Dee Jay Alicia heard a remix from DJ Bennie Bone of Special Kind of Fool by Basic Black played by DJ Ronnie Mac one night.

Dee Jay Alicia decided to bring her mixes to life and called some of the best DJs known for their soulful and sexy style to serve as the musical conductors for the evening, D’Vine One DJs, Mz. Nicky D’Vine and Kris “Jus” Jenson and Arise Radio and Rhythm Factory’s own, Steve Maxwell, each handpicked by Dee Jay Alicia because of the passion and emotion they express through their music.   Together, they set the tone for a love filled evening full of sensual sounds.

The event, held on the Southside of Chicago at Ohh Wee Sweet Tea, was magnificently decorated space, with opulent décor, majestic tables and velvet upholstered furniture that made the guests feel regal.  The weather was unseasonably warm which made the adjoining outdoor patio a popular spot for cocktails, conversation, and cigars from the vendor, Shawntale Hurst of Infused Flavored Cigars.   Walking in, I was pleasantly and warmly greeted by Stacy Benton who welcomed everyone with a smile.  Bar Star, Celia Soto-Harmon, served wine, and rum punch made with Oh Wee Sweet Tea’s delicious and uniquely named Sweet Teas.  I enjoyed my rum punch with their Beyoncé Mango flavored Sweet tea!   There were plenty of vendors there to visit: Sweet Treats by Sunshine, Mable Kincaid Johnson, Bedroom Kandi representative had a display of toys and gadgets designed for the single or the fun-loving and adventurous couple in mind, Trevor Scott had an incredible display of cigar accessories that complimented the Infused Flavored Cigars sold by Shawntale Hurst.  As a cigar smoking virgin, I was pleased with their knowledge and expertise as they guided me to my very first cigar purchase which I enjoyed quite a bit!  House music Lovers were in heaven with T-shirts and gear provided by OurHouseWears owner, Cordelia Adams.  Finally, there was a special treat with the masseuse, Elijah’s Hands who specializes in making sure every inch of your body is relaxed.  There was literally something for everyone to enjoy.

DJ’ing for me is a means of expression “Love” and release “Lust”. I decided after hearing that song to pour my emotions into a mix that became a mix of slow jams, soulful house tracks, hard-hitting afro beats and passion filled classics…and Love & Lust was born. 6 years later and 24 Love and Lust mixes later, I have released a range of emotions from Rejoicing in love, Lusting after the object of my affection and even the anger I felt while in the throes of heartbreak. We all experience these emotions and House Music is our common release. I decided to pull together DJs that represented my “Love & Lust Mindset”. DJs that express passion and emotion through their music and create a live experience of the mixes I’ve created over the past 6 years.

The atmosphere was full of positive energy. I was socializing; taking photos with friends, watching couples cuddle up on the couch with soulful sounds of love in the air.  Conga player, Tunji, played in the background while the DJs serenaded us throughout the night.    Kris “Jus” Jensen opened the night with a set full of soulful tracks that made your body tingle.  Mz. Nicky D’Vine played a beautifully blended set full of love songs. She played a rendition of one of my favorite love songs, Candlelight & You that stopped me mid-conversation and forced me to the dance floor!  Steve Maxwell’s set was played in his signature sound, rich in soul, unique song selections, and seamless blends.   I wasn’t just a guest at this event, I was also a performer.  I presented my latest piece, entitled, Love & Lust keeping with the theme of the evening.  It was a piece showcasing the beautiful balance of love and lust in intimate relationships.  I was pleased that the crowd embraced my words and allowed me to express myself.   The evening’s hostess, Dee Jay Alicia closed the night with a set filled with classic R&B and soul filled love songs.  Love was most certainly in the air!

The night was a beautiful expression of love, sensuality, and lust.  What I particularly loved about this event was that it was for everyone to enjoy.  It was Sweetest Day but you did not have to be a couple to enjoy this night.   Often singles feel left out of holidays, reserved for love and for lovers.  This event was for friends, singles, and couples, anyone who wanted to come out and enjoy a beautiful evening of music.   No matter your relationship status, you were in a room filled with love. It made my Sweetest Day even sweeter!  The next Love & Lust Event is scheduled for February of next year and I guarantee it’s an event you don’t want to miss!

Congratulations to Dee Jay Alicia and everyone involved in the Love & Lust inaugural event.  Everything flowed together just right, creating a musical heaven for everyone in attendance.

Until next time, See you on a Dance Floor
