The Weekend Wrap-Up: A Weekend Full of "Beautiful People"

#SummertimeChi is a time unlike no other.  Every weekend, there are a plethora of activities all around the city.   I love Chicago in summertime.   This weekend was full of beautiful people, fun loving vibes and of course outstanding DJs and house music.

A MOONCHILD’S CELEBRATION

Dee Jay Alicia, one of Chicago’s premier lady DJs, celebrated her birthday Friday night at Ohhh Wee Sweet Tea on the city’s Southside.  The atmosphere was celebratory and lively with plenty of surprises for the guest of honor.  I host and perform at this monthly event but this past Friday night, we celebrated the woman who created the Love and Lust mix series; it was a special night. Soulful house music filled the air on a damp summer night. The musical trifecta of residents, Kris “Jus” Denson, Steve Maxwell and Nicky D’Vine kept the patrons grooving all night.  Guest were treated to a special performance by the legendary Donna McGhee, who flew in especially for the birthday girl.  She sang a few crowd favorites like “I’m a Love Bug” and “It Ain’t No Big Thang” to a thrilled birthday girl.   Singer and artist, Jon Pierce serenaded the birthday girl with a special rendition of Happy Birthday.  Closing out the night was surprise guest DJ, Grammy Nominated Producer and Chosen Few DJ, Terry Hunter.  It was an incredible evening full of love for Dee Jay Alicia.

THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! THE 2018 SILVER ROOM BLOCK PARTY

The Silver Room Block Party is one of the premier summer events.  Exactly as the name describes, it is a neighborhood block party in the heart of the Hyde Park neighborhood on the Southside of Chicago.  It’s a day rooted in fellowship, family and culture.  More than a gigantic gathering of friends, the Silver Room Block Party is a celebration.   Our culture, traditions, unique and special ways we celebrate summertime was so beautifully displayed throughout the day.  A family affair, there was plenty to do no matter your age.  From the “Beautiful Kids” stage which featured arts and crafts, face and henna painting, cupcake decorating and more, there were plenty of activities to keep kids occupied and having fun.

For film buffs, the Harpers Theatre held a film fest, showcasing iconic black films for free viewing throughout the day.   Classics such as Carmen Jones, Mahogany, Daughters of the Dust and more were shown all day long.   The music was plentiful and filled the atmosphere.  Despite an earlier rain, the crowds came out in full force.  In addition to the four outdoor stages, local businesses such as The Promontory, Porkchop, Chant, Akira, and more  played hosts to some of the hottest DJs in Chicago.  House Music, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Neo Soul and Gospel filled the jam packed streets until nightfall.

The Silver Room Block Party is a beautiful celebration of music, culture and community.  This is the Chicago I know and love so much!

MI CASA ES SU CASA!

Sunday, I headed to the northwest side of town to the Wise Owl for a day filled with great food and amazing music.  Mi Casa Holiday hosts a series of events all year long in some of the coolest cities in the world.  This marked the Chicago finale, the final event before the 10 year anniversary celebration in Playa del Carmen, Mexico in October.  Organizer, Julius the Mad Thinker brought a few of his friends to provide musical service to the Sunday afternoon crowd.  DJs Tim Triplet, Ian Friday, Toby G, Marshal Jones and Sean Alvarez kept the crowd dancing until sunset.

Its weekend’s like this when I love my city the most.  I spent my entire weekend surrounded by great people, eating amazing food and dancing to my favorite music in peace and love. There’s so much more to this city than what most see reported on the news.   Each of these events was peace filled and positive, something the news never wants you to see. This is #SummerTimeChi! This is the best of CHICAGO!

Until next time,

See you on a dance floor!
