A Evening with Van Hunt

Van Hunt.png

Singer, Songwriter, producer and musician, Van Hunt is one of the most underrated underground artists of our generation.  His music and artistry fits no label and crosses genres with ease.  He is soul, funk, R&B, rock and roll and more.   City Winery Chicago is known for bringing some of the best musical artists to their beautiful location in the West Loop/Randolph Street location and this past Tuesday was no different.

It’s been six years since his last tour and Van Hunt did not disappoint with his sold out show at City Winery Tuesday night.  Charismatic and engaging, Van Hunt connected intimately  with the audience with just his voice, a drum machine and guitars.  It was raw, intense and deeply personal.  Covering a discography that spans over 15 years, Van Hunt performed favorites “Priest or Police”, “If I Take You Home”, At the End of a Slow Dance”, The Lowest 1 of My Desires”, “Who Will Love Me in Winter”, Highlights”, “Dust” and more!   He also gifted the audience with Hopeless, a song he wrote that was performed by singer Dionne Farris sang on the Love Jones Soundtrack.   His voice wrapped around his lyrics with such passion, exuding the joy, lust, hurt and pain, heartache and loneliness that only his lyrics could portray.   Each song was a beautiful story and he painted the perfect picture with his melodious voice.  The audience enthusiastically sang along while enjoying playful and often funny interactions with Van Hunt.  After a rousing standing ovation he returned and performed crowd favorites, “Down Here in Hell with You” and the sexy, “Seconds of Pleasure” to the crowds sheer joy.  Van Hunt’s voice was incredibly soulful and sexy and his deeply personal lyrics connected with an audience who has clearly missed his presence in the live music scene.  His music and talent is a breath of fresh air in a scene dominated by similar sounds. He stands apart and stands out in the best way.
